Platform: Xbox One (reviewed), PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PCJust because gameplay in modern video games has evolved doesn't mean you can't revert back to a classic style. The first chapter of the new King's Quest series proved that, yes, you can go home again – and enjoy your stay for that matter. Now, we have Nordic Games' The Book of Unwritten Tales 2, a sequel to a cult favorite point-and-click adventure, but this time for consoles. It continues to define how a game of this type can work on consoles – though it isn't without its drawbacks. The game puts you in control of various characters – an elf princess named Ivodora, a gnome mage named Wilbur and a human named Nate, as they attempt to save the land of Avantasia from peril.

It helps to have a bit of fill-in from the original game, but it's easy to catch onto anyway, if only for the game's suave approach to writing and humor. How long you stick with it depends on how much you can adjust to the point-and-click style. An Interesting – and Prolonged – Tale. While the story isn't quite intriguing as what Sierra executed with King's Quest earlier in the summer (it's probably the lack of Christopher Lloyd), The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 nevertheless flows its story into the game with ease.

You'll run into various humorous moments abound with each character, while at the same time catching a few sly references to other bits and pieces of pop culture. Don't be surprised if you somehow end up brushing elbows with a Companion Cube from the world of Portal. It also helps that the developers at KING Art put lots of personality into its characters. Even if they are occasionally trapped in droll situations, each one shows off an exquisite personality that fits into the adventure as a whole. Credit also goes out to the voice actors that give this characters such great life – without them, the game would definitely lose a bit of its pacing. The presentation is also pretty good. Not amazing, mind you, as the still camera placements can sometimes be a bother for running precisely into the object you want to interact with. Still, some of the settings are dazzling, reminding us of the Lord of the Rings lore, but with a bit of original edge. Fans of adventure games will definitely feel right at home here.

A Decent Gameplay System, But Not a Great One. And now comes the thing that's really the deciding factor when it comes to games of this type – the gameplay. After all, you aren't dealing with a keyboard and mouse anymore, or even a touch screen. Instead, you're playing through The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 with a controller – and it can be a struggle sometimes.First off, your characters are slow and sluggish, so it takes them a little longer to get from place to place, and that has an effect on the pacing of the game. Not that it's entirely strenuous, but KING Art could've cut some time down making them go faster.Secondly, some items are clumped together so badly that it's hard to precisely interact with the object you want. We mentioned the camera problem earlier, but having to move about just to make sure the right item is highlighted can be a pain.

When Wilbur enters the staff room (unlike the video walkthrough) there is NO lit strip to grab. He is not holding a fire strip (like in the video). To circumvent you can do only one thing atm: Load a savegame where Nate is sober again - you'll find one in the Savegamethread (stickied).

We experienced this early on in Ivodora's castle, when all we wanted to do is pick up a mirror and we kept messing around with a nearby jewelry box with a bird on it. Thief movie. The lack of an intuitive system – especially one that could've been used with the DualShock 4's TouchPad – is frustrating here.Other than that, the puzzles can be rather ingenious, although, again, you're going to take your sweet time trying to figure things out, mainly due to the lack of cohesiveness with some of them. That's not to say the game's impossible – the difficulty is anything but overwhelming – but, again, the pacing can be questioned with the way certain things are set up. It's not entirely a bother, but you can't help but wonder if some streamlining would've made a difference. The game as a whole has a fun tale to tell, and the characters do manage to keep things interesting, but those looking for an ideal point-and-click experience with The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 won't quite get it here. 6.50The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 is a decent return to a genre that's starting to emerge from the woodwork of other games on the market, but it's not quite a shining example.

There's a question in regards to its pacing and execution in some spots, as well as some puzzles that can take time to resolve. That said, those that do get into the game will be rewarded with a worthy presentation and plenty of chuckles.

If you're a fan of the genre, it's worth a look. But don't expect this Book to be absorbed so easily.

It appears one of the pages does not show up as an interactable object when you press space bar, meaning if you rely on space bar to tell you what objects on the screen can be clicked you may miss it. The page that has this issue is:(Spoiler) The one in the library, on the right side of the unrepaired book. You can still hover over the object and click it, but if you just press space bar, you don't realise that this page can be clicked at least not at the resolution I played at(1152 by 864). If you play at a better resolution this is not an issue. It all really depends how many of the pages you have and if you right click these pages in your inventory and he indicates how many you need, it just means looking around for the rest before progressing.

Those are two completely separate puzzle chains as far as I can recall.
